Meet Your Contractor
Hi, I’m Al Aldrete.
If you’re thinking about remodeling your home, there’s a good chance you’re excited about the finished result—and a little uneasy about everything that has to happen before you get there.
That makes sense.
You’re inviting people into your home. You’re spending a significant amount of money. And you’re trusting your contractor to communicate clearly, solve problems, and do what they said they would do.
That’s the part of remodeling I take seriously.
I grew up in Davis and have spent most of my life here in Yolo County. Black Lab Remodeling was built here, and most of the people we work for are our neighbors.
I don’t expect you to know everything about construction before you call us. Part of our job is to help you understand what you’re getting into—the likely cost, the timeline, the decisions you’ll need to make, and the problems we should think through before construction starts.
And when something unexpected comes up, I believe you deserve to hear about it early, understand your options, and know what happens next.
We’re not going to tell you remodeling is always easy. It isn’t.
Homes have surprises. Plans change. Materials get delayed. Sometimes we uncover something behind a wall that nobody could see coming.
What we can control is how we prepare, how we communicate, how we protect your home, and how we respond when the project throws us a curveball.
That’s what I want Black Lab Remodeling to be known for.
Good work. Straight answers. And a contractor you can actually talk to.
If you’re considering a kitchen, bathroom, or larger home remodel, I’d be glad to hear what you’re thinking about and help you figure out the right next step.
Our Clients
Here's what our satisfied clients had to say
Al Aldrete is the consummate professional. Appointments are easy to schedule and communication is clear and prompt. Not only does Al complete work in a timely manner, he often brainstorms solutions for difficult situations. We appreciate Al's service.
Beta Pi Housing Corporation
"We would highly recommend Al and Black Lab Remodeling to our neighbors, family, and friends. Al helped us get a townhouse we owned in Davis to sell - we had renters in the home for about 5 years. We felt comfortable from the beginning talking to Al and letting him know exactly what we wanted/needed."
Greg and Debbie Sutter - Davis, CA Resell Ready
"Al's work is first-class... he's on time, on-budget, and very easy to work with. I highly recommend him... a five star operation."
Tom Read - Davis, CA Nextdoor review
"Al at Black Lab Remodeling is friendly, competent, knowledgeable and has a great sense of humor! He realized my situation was somewhat of an emergency and stepped up to the plate. The repairs Al made were completed precisely and in a timely manner. Forever grateful for his services!"
Laurie Megonnigil Nextdoor review
"Al was amazing, took on a job I imagine few would do as well. He repaired an attic access cover door, completely rebuilding it from scratch and seeing that it fit perfectly in a door frame that was now out of square due to settling of the house. He was very professional, on time, courteous, skilled and gave accurate estimate of the job. I can't say enough good things about the service and Al.
Vedder Wright - Davis, CA Nextdoor review
"Al was informative, professional, accommodating and very easy to work with. I recommend him to the community."
Steve Farebrother - Woodland, CA Nextdoor review
"Al is so personable, positive, and professional. He is also super knowledgeable and skilled. Al also has a great amount of integrity about the way he conducts himself and his work, so you can count on him to get whatever job he is working on done right."
Jen Rode - Woodland, CA Nextdoor review

Why “Almost Finished” Remodeling Projects Drag On for Months
There is a dangerous phrase in remodeling: “We’re basically done.” For a homeowner, that sounds like relief. The kitchen is usable. The addition is painted. The cabinets are in. The floors are down. The dust is finally starting to clear. But in high-end remodeling and design-build projects, “basically done” can…

The Punch List Trap: Why “Almost Done” Can Last Months
There is a dangerous phrase in luxury remodeling: “We’re almost done.” To a homeowner, that sounds like relief. The dust is nearly gone. The kitchen is usable. The new addition is painted. The bathrooms have tile. The appliances are in. The house finally looks like the renderings. But in construction,…

Your House Is the Collateral: How Vague Scope Turns Into Disputes
For affluent homeowners in Woodland, California, a design-build project is not just a creative decision. It is a financial, legal, and property-risk decision. That may sound dramatic, but it is true. When you remodel a kitchen, add a guest suite, build an ADU, open up the back of the house,…

A lot of people think custom remodeling happens entirely at the house.
Not even close.
Some of the most important work on the Lassen Project is happening right here in our shop—before the finished piece ever reaches the jobsite.
Building it here gives us the space to slow down, make the cuts right, test the fit, and catch problems before installation day.
That means less chaos at the house and a cleaner install when it matters.
Would you rather have custom pieces built in the shop first—or fabricated entirely on-site?
Tell me which you’d trust more. 👇

Bathroom remodels take time to do them right. Part of doing them right includes making sure that the existing plumbing being used isn’t corroded, and if it is to clean it up and make repairs where needed. Next is making sure that proper blocking is in place for future fixtures like mirrors and grab bars. Throw in inspections for top out, drywall screws, shower pan test and waterproofing, time is needed. We plan 4 to 6 weeks for bathroom remodels, this allows for surprises and potential code updates that inspectors require. At the end of the day we all want to have the project move along smoothly and have the vision delivered. And while homeowners want to have their home back as quickly as possible, the goal is to also have a long lasting product that will function the way it is intended. Lasting for a lifetime. #blacklabremodeling #davisca #remodeling #homeimprovement

Demo prep is underway at the Lassen Project in Davis.
Before demo starts on June 30th, our crew is protecting the home first: floor protection is down, a debris pathway is set from the second-story master bathroom to the front door, and the dump trailer will be ready for clean disposal.
We also set up dust containment at the master bathroom to help keep dust from spreading into the master bedroom. Next step: adding HEPA air filtration and a HEPA shop vacuum to help capture dust at the source and keep the rest of the home cleaner during demo.
Clean prep. Controlled demo. Better remodeling process.

This is exactly how a closing gets put at risk in Davis.
This door had already been replaced.
It looked finished. But because it was replaced without a permit, it was called out in the City of Davis resale inspection.
And that one detail changes everything.
No permit usually means no inspections. No inspections means nobody verified the installation details that matter most, especially waterproofing. So now, instead of a simple sale, the heirs are left correcting someone else’s shortcut while trying to settle an estate.
That is what makes this kind of situation so frustrating.
The photos here show the first step of doing it right: opening the area up and flashing the door frame correctly so it can be inspected. Next comes the proper trim detail that directs water down the sealed flashing and away from the door opening.
In other words, this is not just about swapping a door.
It is about permits.
It is about inspections.
It is about sequencing.
It is about materials.
And it is about time.
Because when a resale correction report is reviewed too late, even a fixable item can start pushing against the closing date.
We see this more often than people think:
A home is getting ready to sell.
The report comes in.
Everyone assumes the corrections are minor.
Then the reality shows up—permits are needed, inspections are needed, materials are not sitting on a shelf, and scheduling is suddenly tight.
That is why homeowners, heirs, and Realtors in Davis need a contractor involved early in the resale correction process.
Not after escrow is already moving fast.
Not when title is waiting.
Not when everyone is hoping the list is easier than it looks.
Early review gives you a real plan:
What needs a permit.
What needs inspection.
What can be repaired quickly.
What has lead times.
And what could delay closing if it is handled too late.
If you are selling a home in Davis, do not wait until the last minute to find out what your correction list really means.
Get eyes on it early.
Build the plan early.
Protect the timeline early.
If you need help reviewing a Davis resale correction report, send us a message.

The difference between average tile and high-end tile? Precision. Right here.
One bad cut can make the whole job feel cheap.
One clean cut is what makes it feel custom.
This is the work behind the wow.
